Why join the fight against racism?
At the moment there have been a lot of protests due to the death of George Floyd. George Floyd was an African-American who was murdered by a white police officer when he knelt on his neck, causing Floyd to suffocate. Despite George Floyd constantly saying "I can’t breathe", Derek Chauvin continued to kneel on George Floyd’s neck for just less than 9 minutes. Although George Floyd was taken to the hospital, he still died: he was just one of the many who have fallen victim to police brutality across the United States. The protests began when the police officers involved were merely fired for their actions. The people of Minneapolis and the world demanded justice for Floyd and, after protesting for several weeks, they got it: Derek Chauvin (the man who knelt on Floyd's neck) was charged with second-degree murder and the other three police officers that were there at the time, Thomas Lane, J Alexander Kueng and Tou Thao, faced charges on the grounds of aiding and abetting murder.
There will always be problems in the world but we can change them and make a difference and it’s important that we do. We need to end this racism and discrimination. It shouldn't matter what the colour of your skin is, the colour of your skin shouldn't affect your quality of life, we are all people and we should all be treated fairly and equally.
Some important things that people should remember is that no matter who you are, your life matters, racism is never okay. Fighting against racism isn't exclusive to that targeted race, you can fight against racism no matter your race. It is imperative that white people fight against white supremacy, because they are the ones in the best position to change it. If you can, play your part in ending racism once and for all by spreading awareness, not allowing racism to happen in your community and remembering that black lives matter and everyone matters - regardless of race, colour, creed or gender.
The reality of the world: black parents feel that they have to have conversations with their children to prepare them for the world and the racism out there. They also have to tell their children that black is beautiful because their children have heard so much about black not being beautiful. Every child should know that they are beautiful and valued, no matter what colour their skin is. Beauty cannot be defined by a skin colour. Nothing can. As a white person I may never fully understand the extent of persecution that black people go through, however, I can recognise it and then do what I can to help.
Change needs to take place, discrimination and brutality need to end, and we need to fight to make that happen. So, sign petitions, donate to bail funds for jailed protestors, take part in local protests and educate yourself on the reality of the racism that exists in the world.
