Taking care of others in the corridors
Holly King reminds us all to look out for each other
In Year 7, there is a student who has become partially sighted. Being partially sighted means that he has less vision which makes it difficult for him to make out his surroundings.
At Heathfield we have a great reputation for looking after all members of our community and it's really important for us to recognise who needs help and support and how we can offer this.
To help the Year 7 with partial sight move safely around the school in the right directions, he uses a long white cane. To use it, he moves it from side to side to scan his surroundings for obstacles. The use of the cane is not only to help him but it is also a sign that he is partially sighted so others will be able to behave and take care appropriately.
If you see him, please ensure you leave space around him and move with care and consideration - as we would always expect in the corridors. You may also need to alert anyone who might be rushing and unaware so that they do not blunder accidentally into the student or his cane.

No matter whether a disability is visible or not, it is always important to be kind and considerate towards everyone and to move with care and caution around the school site.
