Vibrant and historical: Dalyan in Turkey
Evie Changleng shares the wonders of Dalyan, in Turkey
Not enough people realise that Turkey is home to beautiful beaches and a stunning culture. Every country has its own culture and sense of traditions, but Turkey’s is vibrant and bursting with energy. This can be explored by going down to a town square, feeling the waves beneath your feet at the beach, and going to complex ruins. All this can be found in the town of Dalyan, in the Aegean region of Turkey.
Dalyan is an alluring town with a population of 8,000 on the south-west side of Turkey. With the beautiful landscape comes a river, and that is where the journey begins.
The river runs through Dalyan, beside the town square. The square is full of shops and restaurants, with the smell of richly cooked Turkish food following you around as you walk. The shops are full of vibrant, bewitching colours, enticing even the strongest willed individuals to have a look and admire the handiwork of clothes and artwork pieces. Walking around the town of Dalyan is appealing to humans and animals. Turkey is known for its heartfelt nature of feeding and protecting animals. Many pets, such as cats and dogs, walk around Dalyan and the town centre also showing their perfectly tame and lovely nature.
The waves of the river are gentle and clear to the eye, also reflecting the ruins in their peaceful reflections. The ruins of Disbuk Iskele can be seen on the cliff face, facing the docks. Green vegetation engulfs the ruins, with all types of trees and a variety of animals.
Before Alexander The Great arrived in what is now classed as southern Turkey, Lycians (various people who lived in Lycia, Antonia, old Turkey ) dominated the area. The Lycians were experts in stonemasonry and built the ruins into the rocks. They believed that the souls of the dead would be transported to the afterworld by magic winged sirens, so many were constructed into coastal cliffs. Hundreds of these have survived today, with one of the most beautiful in Dalyan beside the river.
Dalyan is an amazing town with beautiful views and experiences.
