'There is only one race': a poem
There is only one race:
The human race.
We all have the same planet
That we call home.
We are all born babies,
Our cries greeting the world
And our eyes
Filled with wonder.
In this moment we are all
Full of light
Before the world tries to define us
And tell us who we should be.
Before society segregates us
And divides us.
And enforces white privilege
And white supremacy.
This white supremacy takes
So many different forms across the world.
It’s not okay. It’s never okay.
It should not be like this.
People shouldn’t be judged,
People shouldn’t live in fear,
People shouldn’t be killed
Because of the colour of their skin.
Black lives matter.
Black life matters.
Although I will never fully understand,
I will try and empathise.
Feel the sadness and the pain and the anger,
And I will act,
And learn,
And educate.
Encourage others
To join the change
And fight for justice
Amidst this humanitarian crisis.
Let’s use our voices
To scream out loud
And break down the barriers
Of this racist world.
Let’s join our hands together
As citizens of a united Earth
And drown out the noise
Of the oppressors’ incessant prejudice.
Together, we can stand strong.
Together, we can show what’s right.
Together, we can make a change.
For the sake of each other and humanity.
Right now, bear the discomfort.
Talk about racism.
Call out injustice.
Spread equality through your everyday life.
Be a part of the voice
That beckons a brighter future
In such an unfair world
That needs to change.
