Top 10 things to do at home in Sussex
I
The school year is ending, which means the Summer holidays are upon us. Many of us have particular things that we feel are a tradition to our summer holiday. Maybe that is going to the beach or having a water fight or maybe it is going away on holiday with your family. Going on holiday is something that people usually consider as a highlight of their summer but there's actually plenty to do at home. Here are some ideas for what to do if you're on a 'staycation'.
1. Barbecues. Barbecues are the perfect thing to do in the summer. The weather is beautiful and you can invite friends and family over and really enjoy yourselves. You can do it at any time of the day and you can just have a great time. Only a little bit of money will have to go into the food but apart from that you can create the fun. Although this as a direct path to enjoyment you can also toast marshmallows to have even more fun.
2. Garden camping. There are some great campsites around this area but it is even more fun if you do it in your garden. Only a tiny amount of money is involved and that is to be spent on snacks and a tent, if you don’t already have one. The great thing about this is that it’s cheap and if you forget something then you can just go back to your house. You can tell stories, stay up all night and have a fantastic time.
3. Water fights. In the summer it can get really hot and the perfect way to cool down is by having a water fight. Another thing that you could do is get your paddling pool out so you can play in it whilst having your water fight. A paddling pool is also helpful for refilling whatever you are using to soak other people. Water fights are best done with lots of people because it is made much more competitive and enjoyable.
4. Swimming. Swimming is perfect for any time of the year but there is a specific swimming pool for when the water is warm. That is an outdoor pool. An outdoor pool is heated mostly by the sun. This is a great place to go with friends and family. One that I know of is in Lewes - Pells Pool - one of the oldest outdoor pools in England. They often have floats out and they have a pool for babies and toddlers as well. It isn’t too deep so perfect for any young brothers and sisters.
5. Fruit picking. A very traditional British thing is having strawberries and the next activity to do is strawberry picking. There is a place that is just outside Horam that is absolutely fantastic and they grow the yummiest strawberries. They don’t just grow strawberries but also many other berries, including raspberries, blackberries, gooseberries and loads more. You will be given a plastic basket (there are a couple of sizes that you can pick from) and then you walk over to the berries that you want to pick. After you have chosen the berries you can go and enjoy yourself and pick them. Once you have filled your basket, you go back to the hut and and you pay by weight. Then you can go home, wash your berries and finally, one of the best parts, you get to eat them.
6. Beach Days. The next thing is going to the beach. Going to the beach is almost like having a mini holiday. You can go with friends, family or both. The beach is great because there are pebbles, sand and sea. Only a small amount of money is involved and that is for beach essentials (if you don’t already have them). By beach essentials I mean buckets, spades, a wind shield and food because there is no point going to the beach for a couple of hours, it has to be all day.
If you are going all day, I would recommend getting there about ten and then you can have lunch around twelve, half twelve. Having dinner on the beach is the best. You have to have fish and chips but if you don’t like fish you could have a sausage or a pickled egg! If you are going to the beach then I would say that Pevensey is the best.
7. Country Walk. There are so many places that you can go on walks. You can drive to places and then walk but I find that it is more enjoyable if you walk the whole way. The Cuckoo Trail is a great place to go on walks. Another great place in Heathfield is the Turf fields. The Turf fields are exactly what they sound like; they are fields. These fields lead off into many places including woods, ponds and even pubs. When I have gone on walks with my family, we have sometimes stopped off at the Runt in Tun which is a great pub that I highly recommend. If you have a dog, you can take them on the walk as well! If you want a tougher challenge, try walking the Seven Sisters cliffs between Cuckmere Haven and Eastbourne.
8. Cycling. Cycling is something that I really enjoy because you can have races or just go on a relaxing bike ride with family or friends. Cycling is really good exercise and is also very enjoyable. There are many places that you can go cycling, including the Cuckoo Trail, the road and many other places. Overall, I think that cycling is the perfect thing to do in the warm summer weather. If you don’t already have a bike then you can get one from places like Halfords, Amazon, Argos or hire one.
9. Park. There is the Tower Rec in Heathfield and there is a park in Horam, near Lakeside. There are loads of other parks in places like Hailsham and Eastbourne but it is always easier if you go somewhere closer. You can go to the park with friends or family, any time of day. Going to the park is great because there is the part with the swings, slide and other typical playground things as well as a field area, perfect for playing football and doing other sports. I recommend bringing a ball when you go to the park. It is a great thing for the summer.
10. Bewl Water. Bewl Water is a reservoir near Lamberhurst where you can have a fantastic time. It is free to get in though you do have to pay to park. You can go on a long walk and there are also activities there including paddle boats and sailing boats. I recommend taking a picnic to enjoy partway through your day. We had a great day there and I am sure that you and your family will too.
I hope that's given you some ideas for the next six weeks! Enjoy!
