French fancy: a holiday to remember
Emma Hills reports on her memories of visiting France in the summertime.
In the summer of 2019, I went to France with my family. Not only was this an amazing holiday but it was also my first ever time going abroad. It was an incredible experience and it definitely made me want to broaden my horizons and explore the world, seeing new places, discovering different cuisines and going on an adventure.
We travelled to France by ferry. On the trip, I enjoyed reading my book, playing card games with my family, taking in the refreshing smell of the sea and having a few snacks along the way, but my favourite part was the excitement I felt as I could see France emerging in the distance. Despite it being a long ferry journey, I still had a lot of fun and, on our way back, we even saw Paul Freeman who acted in Raiders of the Lost Ark.
Once we were there, we enjoyed the beautiful countryside as we drove to our gîte. The rolling hills almost felt like we were driving along a road in England. We arrived at our gîte and were welcomed by a very smiley couple. There was a shared pool, a little badminton set and table tennis. I could tell from the start that I was going to enjoy myself.
We decided to explore our surrounding area. Nearly every day, we walked to the supermarket which was along a country stretch. We enjoyed a walk along a beautiful beach and had a few struggles trying to order a sandwich. We messed around in the pool and my sister and I even attempted the famous lift from Dirty Dancing. It didn’t quite go to plan as I discovered that day that wearing goggles was important due to it being a salt water pool.
We also went to Honfleur, a picturesque city in northern France, which was incredibly beautiful. We went in the daytime then and we decided to go back the following night. During the day, we walked through cobbled streets and enjoyed a lovely meal at a restaurant. I had fish and chips which came wrapped in printed paper. It was funny to see a French family confused about the fish and chips being served this way. When we went back at night, it was truly magical. It felt like it had been pulled straight out of a Disney film with the twinkling lights, the smells of delicious food, the reflection on the water and the family performing a live set in the dark. We had crêpes, looked around the shops and I bought a little keyring with macaroons and the Eiffel Tower on it. It was a beautiful little souvenir and a wonderful way to remember this incredible holiday. It was a night that I will never forget.
I had an incredible time in France, visiting beaches, enjoying the food, swimming in the pool, taking in the scenic views and spending time with my family. I hope that I can go back one day in the future with my family and make their experience as spectacular as mine.
