Henry Heard: a future surveyor
Henry Heard can remember to this day the debate he ran with Huw Merriman at Heathfield with the college debating club. Asking him to recall his best memories of Heathfield, he proudly told me about the huge amounts of support that Ms White from Sixth Form gave him with his personal statement that led him to be accepted into his first choice university - University of East Anglia - on a Marketing and Management course. He also told me about one of his favourite teachers, Mr Sparrow, who helped him achieve a higher UCAS grade. Henry was proud of his time at Heathfield and he particularly loved the library facilities where he spent hours writing essays for History or Economics.
Henry would advise not to take a gap year, but go straight to university so as not to lose momentum or motivation. Due to the pandemic, Henry’s time at Heathfield finished suddenly but he managed to meet his final goals of university despite the challenges he faced. Henry is now about to finish his 3-year Marketing and Management degree and is also working towards his future career by doing some industry work with the company CBRE so he can train to be a surveyor.
Henry has loved his degree - especially the variety of it. He explains how there are many different modules that and topics so there is always something he is interested in, making every day a new adventure. Outside of his studies, some of Henry’s proudest moments have been playing rugby both as a part of his university team and as a member of his home rugby club which has been third best in Kent twice in a row. It is as much social, as academic experiences that have helped to shape who Henry is today.
Looking back on his education, Henry has some clear advice: 'Do what you enjoy and, when choosing your university course, pick a degree you're going to like doing so you can make the most of your time at university. Use the advice from your teachers wisely and talk to them if you are unsure about your next steps.' Speaking from his experiences, he also strongly suggests that you should make an effort with new people in Sixth Form and try to make lots of new friends.
It's great to see another former student making the most of all the opportunities offered to them.
