Mountains of fun for every season
The Alps mountain range, located in the South East of France, is a beautiful area. In the winter, the snow on the mountains is like ice and sugar glistening in the sun ; the snow trickles down from the sky, leaving a fluffy carpet of snow that envelops the mountains. In the magnificent mornings you can wake to a wonderful white wonderland with snow-covered evergreen trees standing tall guarding the mysterious rocks and valleys. As for entertainment, you can hire skis or a snowboard or go hiking and enjoy the astonishing views. As a snack for after, you can enjoy a lovely warm hot chocolate or coffee. For later, there are lovely restaurants serving warm traditional dishes, such as raclette or fondue. January temperatures on the valley floors range from 23° to 39° F (−5° to 4° C) to as high as 46° F (8° C).
In the warm summers, when the cold snow melts away, leaving a muddy, rocky ground behind, you can go mountain biking down what used to be the ski slopes. Additionally, the wildlife comes out of hibernation and forage around for food. When the weather is clear, you can go to a high spot and peer out into the magnificent surroundings. If you are lucky, you can see Mont Blanc, the biggest mountain in the alps! Mont Blanc stands high at 4,810m high! There are paths where you can go hiking and visit some cheese shops and wine shops; these are very traditional. July temperatures range between 59° and 75° F (15° and 24° C).
The journey to the mountains is amazing, whether you take the snow train that runs in winter, a ferry across the sea, the Euro tunnel or even aeroplane! However, a plane can be quite risky as the weather is difficult to predict due to the clouds bouncing off the mountains. In the morning it could be sunny but by lunch time it is really stormy. If you are driving, as you get closer to the mountains the landscape changes slowly until you can see towering mountains. Going up the mountains is fun as well, there are tunnels going through mountains and the roads wind up to the resorts. The temperature changes as you travel up, as does the pressure.
In conclusion, the alps are a lovely place to go, packed with family fun all year round, whether you go in summer or winter! It is also child friendly as in the winter they can go sledding and in summer they can go on fun woodland walks and see the wildlife.
