Stunned: Yr 12 defeat Yr 13 6-4 in Sixth Form Football Match
Year 12 showed they were not pushovers to the Year 13 football team as they beat their sixth form counterparts 6-4 in a closely fought contest on December 10th. The Year 12 team found themselves 4-2 up at half time before two more goals were scored in the second half, including an impressive pile driver from Lewis Reed-Davies which ensured a Year 12 victory.
With a crowd cheering on both sides, the teams tried to find the breakthrough before two goals scored in a blink of an eye saw the Year 12s take a 2-0 lead. Their opposition then began to take more possession of the ball and it wasn't long before Year 13 got a goal back.
The second half started similarly to the first, as both teams failed to break each other down and after a closely fought half which finished 2-2, the Year 12s had done enough in the first half to gain victory 6-4. Both sides were denied more goals as Year 12 hit the post twice and Sam Abbot produced class saves to deny Year 13 from clawing back a result.
Year 13 had substitutes to their disposal which meant a constant change of positioning. This, perhaps, was a leading factor to their defeat, as they were frequently changing their defence in order to give everyone playing time. However, the Year 12 team kept the same side in the same positions throughout whole match, meaning they had a tactical advantage.
Though the match was very well tempered, Billy Lushington was close to getting sent off nearer the end of the match by referee and Head of Sixth Form, Mr Howard who refereed remarkably in managing the match.
After the Year 12 victory, Charles Fairweather (Year 13) commented on the match stating, “The Years 12s have been together for years and that shows in their play. The fact they had no substitutes meant they could play with the same team whereas we had to change the side every ten minutes which mucked up our system. If the Year 13s were better prepared we would’ve beaten them.”
Well played lads. I’m sure a rematch is on the cards soon…
