A thrilling read: The Dead Ex

The Dead Ex by Jane Corry follows the gripping story of Vicki and her ex-husband. I think that Corry's style of writing really draws you in and I love the way the chapters split into both character’s perspectives so it keeps you reading because you want to know what happens next.
Vicki is an aromatherapist living in West Cornwall. She has had her heart broken by her ex-husband David and is devastated by the loss of their son, Patrick. Her life has become significantly more difficult as she has become more lonely and she suffers with seizures. What’s more, there is no cure or form of medication to prevent them from happening. Stress is one of her major triggers so her current situation is causing more frequent attacks.
When David goes missing, the police turn up on Vicki’s doorstep to question her. Living so far away from her ex-husband and not having any contact with him, she tells the police that she has no idea where he is. When they leave she feels like his current wife, Tanya might know something…
While reading the book, as the reader you notice that Vicki has secrets that she is keeping but her fear is that if she admits certain things, it will make her look incredibly guilty.
However, the police expect that she knows more than she claims she does. Vicki knows that there are things that she cannot remember as she suffers with memory loss due to her seizures. She is convinced that the last time she saw her ex-husband was several years ago (when they divorced) but something in the back of her mind is making her doubt herself.
We find out towards the end of the book that David’s wife Tanya is the one who reported him missing, but she doesn’t know where he went or what happened. When Vicki finds out, she goes to Tanya’s house and starts hitting her and talking about how she shouldn’t have gotten her involved. Suddenly, out of nowhere, they start fighting and Tanya ends up dead.
Another viewpoint that we are introduced to later in the book is that of Zelda. She is a single mother who has a daughter called Scarlett. Zelda and Scarlett like to play games but not like we would imagine. Scarlett is a drug smuggler. However, she is too young and innocent to know what she is doing but we can see when reading the book that she is easily manipulated by her mother. Little did Scarlett know that this experience will shape her life forever!
Scarlett goes to a foster family when her mother is caught. After staying a while, she gets into trouble and is moved again. She eventually settles with a family who live in the country and is able to live a life without breaking the law in any kind of way. Her mother is up for parole after a few years, however an incident in prison means that more time has been added to her sentence.
This book is a very exciting read and it will keep you guessing what’s going to happen next.
How can Vicki prove her innocence, when she’s not even sure of it herself? The answer lies along these four women!
