A ray of sunshine: Mamma Mia

Drama, romance, singing and dancing! What more could you want? Mamma Mia is full to the brim with entertainment and will brighten even the darkest of winter nights, argues Emma Hills.
I love Mamma Mia so much because it doesn’t matter how I am feeling, watching it always puts a smile on my face.
Mamma Mia is set in Kalokairi, Greece and it follows the story of Sophie and her mum, Donna. We find out that Sophie is getting married and wants to meet her dad for the first time. The only problem is that she doesn’t know which man out of the three is actually her father and neither does Donna. We go on a journey through the beautiful villa in Greece with Sophie and Donna and find out that her mother’s life wasn’t as simple as it first seemed to be.
So many people love this movie because it is such an enjoyable film and never fails to entertain. The average review of this fantastic film is 4.5 stars which is an incredibly high rating and just proves that lots of people share my view about how amazing this film really is.
Mamma Mia includes the hit songs of the Swedish band ABBA. ABBA is my all time favourite band which means that I can sing along to all of the songs. I think that it is so clever how they incorporated the lyrics of the songs into the main story and structured it around that.
Despite having watched this movie a million times before, I still find myself gripped on the edge of my seat every single time. It doesn’t matter how many times I watch Mamma Mia, every time feels like the first and that’s the magic of it.
What is even better than the movie is the musical version. I went to see it in March and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. The atmosphere was wonderful and it really felt like there was no fourth wall as the audience sang along and interacted with the actors on stage.
There was music, dancing, an amazing set and costumes that I was most definitely envious of. The actors really captured the jovial and upbeat feeling of the movie and translated it onto the stage. For me, this was even more magical because it was all happening before me and it really felt like I had been sent on a boat to Kalokairi.
I really hope that you got a feel for the beautiful island of Kalokairi and you want to get on a boat there and sing and dance with Donna as much as I do.
