Visiting the stunning island of Sark

Heidi Skeggs remembers her trip to the small island of Sark.
Sark is a hidden island off the coast off the Bailiwick of Guernsey and is just under 3 hours from the UK. It is an island that has no cars and a small population of under 500 people.
I very recently visited the Bailiwick of Guernsey and explored the islands surrounding it. Sark is one of them - the peace and quiet you get when cycling about is unlike anything else. The only way to get around the island is by horse and carriage, walking or cycling. The boat journey from Guernsey to Sark is only a short 55 minutes.
As soon as you step onto the harbour you can breathe in the fresh air. With such a tiny harbour all you can see is rocks, the sea, and a bridge that entices you to explore more. At the point of being greeted by the locals you can tuck into ice cream or rent a bike and even ride a horse carriage. Of course, being one of the only car free islands globally it has lots of cycling tracks.
As you come across the village square you come across the world's smallest prison, Sark prison, that has the capacity for only two prisoners! It was initially built as a girl’s school but was later converted into a prison. The prisoners who come here will only be allowed to be here for two days. The first offender was there for apparently stealing her mistress' handkerchief; she was only a young girl!
If you keep on pedalling, you come to the divide between Little Sark and Big Sark. The bridge is very narrow so be careful! The bridge is stunning with outstanding views across the sea and the beaches. Just into little Sark, you come across Caragh’s Chocolates, a lovely small chocolate shop with outstanding hot chocolate!
Time to turn back now and go to a beach? Hop back on your bike and head towards Stock, a lovely hotel and restaurant. Just down by Stocks is the gorgeous hidden beach with a waterfall like no other. Hogsback beach is a quiet area where all you can hear is the ocean lapping the sand. Onto Stocks now for a lovely scone and jam. The cream is nationally famous for being made from such pure milk - it's a rich yellow and 'tastes like heaven'.
Sadly, it’s time to give those bikes back and return to the noise of the world. So, wave goodbye to the island as your boat departs. But keep these memories you made safe. And lucky you, you’re back off to Guernsey where your adventures can continue!
