Season of mist and mellow music
Autumn is a season of getting cosy and warm - of wrapping up in a warm blanket with a hot drink. But what else can we do to make ourselves feel extra cosy and warm, inside and out? Music is the answer! Here, Lottie Macro recommends some songs to get you ready for the colder weather.
A lot of my songs for Autumn have acoustic guitar in because, in my opinion, the sound of acoustic guitar is perfectly calming and autumnal. Obviously songs that you may describe as “autumnal” may sound very different to my selection of songs, but I hope that you will enjoy one or two of these songs and that they make you feel as cosy and warm as they make me feel.
1) Cherry Wine by Hozier: there is just something so calming about some of his songs that make them perfect to listen to in autumn. In this song, the sound of birds, pretty guitar and his soft voice come together to create a cosy, warm mood.
2) Autumn Leaves by Ed Sheeran: the title says it all. This song directly refers to autumn and it includes different string instruments and twinkly piano. Autumn in a song!
3) I Will Wait by Mumford & Sons: The first verse of the song links to autumn and the lyrics in the chorus link to time which is a part of Autumn – our seasonal reminder of how the world can change over time.
4) Drunk on Halloween by Wallows: the link to Halloween makes this song feel autumnal. Also, this song is in a major key which makes it feel happy and warm.
5) Bonfire Heart by James Blunt: another song with lyrics that directly link to this season of bonfires and falling leaves.
6) October by Alessia Cara: this song doesn’t necessarily make me feel cosy, but it does make me think about the link between nature changing and life changing over time.
7) I Think We Danced (But I Can’t Be Sure) by Rand: Not only does the sound of guitar make me feel cosy and think of Autumn, jazz music does too! There is something so nice about the sound of jazz music: it’s uplifting, groovy and the major key makes it feel happy and warm. There are lots of jazz songs I could give you, but this is a particular favourite of mine.
8) Stubborn Love by The Lumineers: The Lumineers have quite a few songs that have an autumnal feel to them but this one does in particular. Their use of different string instruments is so calming.
This autumn, have a think about what reminds you of the season and what makes you feel comforted and warm - after all, we could all do with a bit of that!
