Easter - more than just eggs and bunnies
Everyone loved the Easter holidays but we have to remember Easter is not just about the chocolate!!!
Everyone enjoys Easter. There are chocolate eggs, bunnies, chicks and you get a holiday to spend time with family and much more. In these modern days, we don’t really think about the true meaning of Easter and why we have it, but for Christians Easter is really all about celebrating Jesus being resurrected after his crucifixion on the cross.
Hundreds and hundreds of years ago, a man named Jesus Christ was put on trial by the Romans because he said that he was God’s son and that he was the King of the Jews. The Roman governor asked the people from the public who they wanted to be set free before the people in trial were sentenced to death. The people didn’t choose Jesus and they began to say, “Crucify him!”
The accounts tells us that the soldiers began to mock Jesus. They took off all of his clothes and put on a scarlet robe. Then they made a crown of thorns and laced it on Jesus’s head. They then put a stick in his right hand and kneeled before him and they began to mock him with their words. “Long live the King of the Jews!” they said. Then the soldiers spat on Jesus and took the stick and hit him with it. When they had finished mocking him the soldiers removed the scarlet robe and put Jesus’s ordinary clothes back on. They took him outside to crucify him.
As the soldiers were taking Jesus outside they met a man named Simon on the way and the soldiers forced Simon to carry the cross in which they were going to put Jesus upon. Along the way Jesus and the soldiers came to a place named Golgotha which meant “The Place of the Skull.” The soldiers took two other men too go beside Jesus. They nailed the three men to the crosses and then the men including Jesus were there for everyone to see. Jesus died.
One of Jesus’s disciples asked for permission and was allowed to remove Jesus from the cross. Jesus was then put into a cave and a big stone boulder was put in front. The boulder was so big that not one man could push it out of the way. Yet days later, a woman went to the cave and the boulder was gone and so was Jesus’s body. A man came up to her and told her that he was Jesus.
Jesus had been resurrected which Christians say prove that he must be the son of God. He went and visited all of his friends and family as well as his disciples.
This is the story that Christians remember each Easter but they don’t just think about this, they too think about all of the modern things such as chocolate, rabbits, chicks and much more. It's a hugely important part of the Christian calendar. So, when you are finishing off your chocolate eggs or having an egg hunt next year then remember this meaning and why we really have Easter. Remember it’s not just about the chocolate!
